Things to See and Do in Unemploymentville: Listen to Music and Dance

Things to See and Do in Unemploymentville: Listen to Music and Dance

Music can change my mood faster than almost anything.  The music I choose depends on whether I am seeking

a) a more peaceful feeling
b) to brighten a sour mood
c) to energize myself
d) find my fighting spirit
e) all of the above

I still have a Playlist I created for “the final day”.  Since we were given advance notice of our impending layoff, there was the day we were to come in, collect any final belongings and have our exit interview.  Funny, even now, writing these words I feel myself tensing up, experiencing the angst all over.

So my playlist?  It included…
Broadway hits that always made me feel more joyful, such as….
– Everything’s Coming Up Roses (Gypsy)
– I Could Have Danced All Night (My Fair Lady)
– Tonight (West Side Story)

Don’t think such corny songs could make you feel better?  They did me, but watch this video and see if you don’t feel more upbeat.  In fact get your butt off that chair and DANCE while you watch.  Join in…. virtually.

Songs of survival and pride in one’s self
I Will Survive
Don’t Cry for Me Argentina,
Eye of the Tiger
I Am What I Am

and then some random feel-good music
Dancing in the Street

I Gotta Feeling,
Peace of Mind,
Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World
(the medley version by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole)

These songs bring out good feelings in ME.  I am sure each of us has our own special music that makes us feel stronger, happier, more confident.  I strongly advise you to find yours and play it, regularly.

Now…better still is to dance around to it.  Dance out that feeling, so that every muscle and cell in the body catches the feeling.

And better still, if you play a musical instrument, make some music!  No ability to play?  Then sing.  Sing some of these songs that you love.
