{"id":2896,"date":"2024-01-02T15:05:28","date_gmt":"2024-01-02T19:05:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unemploymentville.com\/blog\/?p=2896"},"modified":"2024-01-18T01:01:24","modified_gmt":"2024-01-18T05:01:24","slug":"i-cant-find-a-job-and-im-depressed-what-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unemploymentville.com\/blog\/i-cant-find-a-job-and-im-depressed-what-now\/","title":{"rendered":"I Can&#8217;t Find a Job and I&#8217;m Depressed \u2013 What Now?"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>Depression can literally be a life-threatening risk when you&#8217;re unemployed.\u00a0 It can sap your ability to get out of bed and move, let alone look for a job.\u00a0 According to <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/171044\/depression-rates-higher-among-long-term-unemployed.aspx\">Gallup<\/a>, you are 2 to 3 times more likely to suffer from depression if you are out-of-work than if working full-time.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\">\r\n<table>\r\n<tbody>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>In a crisis?\u00a0 Contact the Crisis Text Line<\/strong> <br \/><strong>Text HOME to <a href=\"sms:741741\">741741<\/a> to connect with a Crisis Counselor <\/strong><br \/>Free 24\/7 support at your fingertips <br \/>US and Canada: text <a href=\"sms:741741\">741741<\/a> <br \/>UK: text <a href=\"sms:85258\">85258<\/a> | Ireland: text <a href=\"sms:%2050808\">50808<\/a><\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Work is more than just income.\u00a0 Neuropsychologist Brittany LeMonda explained to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health-news\/covid19-job-anxiety-ways-to-deal-with-it#Coping-with-the-anxiety\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Healthline<\/a>, \u201cwith work, we feel a greater sense of self-esteem, advocacy, and a sense of purpose.\u00a0But you probably didn&#8217;t need a neuropsychologist to explain why not having a job leaves you down.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>For me, the toughest part of being out of work was feeling that I did not control my own life and that the world was doing fine without me.\u00a0 I needed to focus on what I could control in my life and find some ways to contribute to the world now (even if there was no monetary reward for doing them). \u00a0I also tried to remember that I might contribute something even more significant in the future, so I had to keep going to the future, one step at a time.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Originally I planned to title this article <strong>\u201cHow to Escape Job Searching, Rejection and Depression Hell,\u201d<\/strong> <strong>but I reject the idea that anyone can <em>promise<\/em> an escape.\u00a0<\/strong> What I\u2019m going to outline is a 5-Day Plan that I hope will make you feel more hopeful and more human. These are simple steps you can do NOW to help you feel somewhat better.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Just \u2018somewhat better?\u2019 you ask.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Here\u2019s the deal \u2013 if I promise to make your life awesome and make you bulletproof and ready to blaze a new career path for yourself and you don\u2019t get there \u2013 you\u2019ll either hate me or blame yourself.\u00a0 Neither is a good thing.\u00a0 So how about we aim for you to feel somewhat better, a bit more hopeful, a bit more able to walk outside and feel joy? <strong>Together let\u2019s try to make you feel less overwhelmed \u00a0\u2013 not quite so down.\u00a0<\/strong> If this idea appeals to you, keep reading.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>My plan is designed to be done over five days, but feel free to do it at whatever pace suits you.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Day 1<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Step 1) Take a walk for 15 minutes outside of your house.<\/strong>\u00a0 If you have children, either bring them along or ask someone to watch them.\u00a0 If possible, try to find a bit of nature along your walk.\u00a0 According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/brain-waves\/201906\/how-much-time-in-nature-is-needed-see-benefits\">Psychology Today <\/a>\u00a0two hours a week (averaging 17 minutes a day) in a natural setting decreases blood pressure, stress levels, and improves mental health.\u00a0 <strong>But, regardless of the setting, the important thing is that you get up and out and walk for 15 minutes.\u00a0 Go.\u00a0 Now.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Step 2) Take a shower.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Step 3) Write down your biggest fear\/pain point\/worry about being out of work for you.<\/strong>\u00a0 Think about what is bothering you the most.\u00a0 Often, we try to push bad thoughts out of our minds.\u00a0 I\u2019ve heard this compared to trying to push a balloon down in the water.\u00a0 It will keep resurfacing.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>It is healthier to get your biggest issue out on paper where you can see it.\u00a0 I\u2019m interested in hearing about these, so I can understand what Unemploymentville readers are struggling with and offer info and ideas that will be helpful.\u00a0 So <a href=\"mailto:%3ca%20href=%22mailto:test@example.com?subject=Biggest%20Problem\">email me at admin at Unemploymentville.com<\/a> and put a subject line of: Biggest Problem<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Day 2<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Step 4)<\/strong> <strong>Make notes about stuff you are good at.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Being out of work definitely hurt my confidence and self-esteem.\u00a0 When I would make any mistake, I couldn\u2019t shrug it off.\u00a0 Now, when I have a job, my usual thoughts are, &#8220;Well, no one is perfect.&#8221; or &#8220;There are lots of other things I&#8217;m good at.\u00a0 This just isn&#8217;t my strong suit.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>I\u2019d like you to sit down and make a list of things you are good at.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t have to be something you get paid to do. If you are a good listener, a loyal friend, can make people laugh write it down.\u00a0 If you are fearless, write it down.\u00a0 If you can cook an amazing dinner, write it down.\u00a0 And yes, also put the sort of stuff down that you might include on a resume.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Step 5)<\/strong> <strong>Get input from others.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Now, I want <strong>you<\/strong> to hear how other people think you rock and here is a simple way to do so.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>I want you to write at least 5 people with an email along the lines of this one below.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\r\n<div style=\"background-color: #fec; border: solid 1px; padding-right: 20px; padding-left: 20px;\">\r\n<p><em>Hi,<\/em><\/p>\r\nI wanted to touch base, see how you are doing, and get your opinion on something.\r\n<p>I\u2019m currently out-of-work and I\u2019m trying to make good use of my time and evaluate job and career options both short and longer-term. Part of my process is getting other people\u2019s perspectives of me.<\/p>\r\n<p>What do you consider to be my 3 (or 4) strongest qualities or capabilities? But I refuse to be reduced by it.\u201d<\/em> \u2013Maya Angelou<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><em>\u201cRock bottom became the solid foundation in which I rebuilt my life.\u201d<\/em> \u2013J.K. Rowling<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><em>\u201cObstacles can\u2019t stop you. Problems can\u2019t stop you. Most of all, other people can\u2019t stop you. can do for them.\u00a0 If possible, do this in person, but a phone call will work also.\u00a0 Or consider a video call as there is something about seeing a familiar face that gives people a lift.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Step 11) Do something you love, something fun.\u00a0 Do NOT do anything job related this day.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>This is where you do what you planned in step 8.\u00a0 Have fun.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3><strong>Summary &#8211; How to Go Forward from Job Loss &amp; Depression <\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p><strong>Be patient with yourself, yet hopeful.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The sadness, apathy, or anger you feel are unlikely to disappear overnight.\u00a0 You are going through a difficult time and <strong>it\u2019s normal to struggle emotionally<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>If you\u2019re able, get some professional emotional support.\u00a0 I\u2019ve included the contact information for <a
