Three Keys to Cutting Costs While Waiting for a ‘REAL JOB’<\/h3>\n

You tear open the envelope and stare down at your horse boarding bill for the month. Your eyes widen, the envelope flutters to the ground, and you put your face in your hands. You haven\u2019t had the strength to announce to the world that you\u2019ve just lost your job, and if you don\u2019t hustle, you\u2019re soon going to lose your horse.<\/p>\n

This is exactly what I experienced when I exited college. I\u2019d had a steady job throughout school (one that I loved at the college\u2019s equestrian center), but there were no openings for full or part time positions after graduation. I was doomed, and if something didn\u2019t look up quickly, I\u2019d soon be separated from my horse.<\/p>\n

Blue was the star in the dark sky of my teenage years.\u00a0 I can remember many days I didn\u2019t want to do life, but I did anyway.\u00a0<\/strong> Because there was a horse dependent on me for his breakfast!\u00a0 I rolled out of bed at 5:45, and I went to the barn before school.\u00a0 After school\u2013back to the barn.\u00a0 Blue would lend me his legs to give my heart wings.<\/p>\n

\"unemployment<\/a><\/p>\n

Lots of people don\u2019t release their depressed emotion to others because they\u2019re ashamed or afraid of how they\u2019ll be received.<\/em><\/p>\n

Blue had always been my silent listener for the good and bad in my life.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t lose him.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Money has a way of controlling our lives if we let it. I was facing a situation where I needed it, but couldn\u2019t get it. Months passed and I wondered why I wasted three and a half years of my life on a college degree when I couldn\u2019t get a \u201creal job.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"unemployment<\/a>In the midst of hopeless things I couldn\u2019t change, my animals kept me going. I decided no matter what, I couldn\u2019t abandon them. They carried me though unemployment depression, and as my thank you<\/em>, I was going to work my tail off to keep us together.<\/p>\n

First, I knew I needed to cut my costs.<\/strong> I gathered my courage to ask for help. Thankfully, I was able to live at home (for free, thanks Mom and Dad). The only thing I allowed myself to buy was gas for my car\u2026and maybe I snuck in a few necessities for the horse.<\/p>\n

Second, I offered up all of my extra time helping out at the barn.<\/strong> By nothing short of a miracle, I was able to work off the majority of my board for a few months! Then, if you\u2019re doing a good job, word travels fast that you\u2019re reliable, and I started getting calls to house sit for horses, dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, and chickens. This gave me enough to survive with my horse\u2019s cost until I found that \u201creal job\u201d (instead of a survival job).<\/p>\n

Third, I searched everything I could find for job leads<\/strong>\u2014newspaper, LinkedIn, Indeed, Glassdoor, word of mouth, bulletin boards, walking into stores and asking\u2014until finally, four months later, I had a lead that turned into sustainable employment.<\/p>\n

Those four months job searching were some of the longest of my life. I truly believe I would\u2019ve given up if it hadn\u2019t been for those chocolate brown eyes cheering me on. Looking at my horse reminded me that there is one thing I can control\u2014keeping us together. Failure wasn\u2019t an option on the table.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re struggling through a never-ending job search right now, take heart. Find your reason to keep going.<\/strong> Don\u2019t lose hope.<\/strong> That \u201creal job\u201d is coming just around the corner. In the meantime, if you\u2019re truly determined to fight for the things you\u2019re passionate about, I believe you will find a way.<\/p>\n
